Week 2: Mind

THINK ABOUT THIS….
We all like routine and generally handle life a little better when we know what to expect day-in and day-out. In times of routine, we don’t stress as much, we don’t worry as much, we are more consistent with our disciplines, and our best habits seem to rise to the surface.
As you may have noticed, normal and consistent routine is NOT what we are experiencing right now. Everything has been turned on end. We’re out of our comfort zones of routine, and we all have our own unique, and often very personalized, ways of coping with that. However, a quick scroll through social media or reading of the news shows some fairly consistent trends for how people are adapting to this season. Zoom meetings, online worship experiences, pajamas as daily uniforms, and plenty of cooking and baking seem to be the most common themes for how we are all adapting. While a slowed-down lifestyle is probably a good thing, it also makes sense to push pause to check our temple care.
In 1 Corinthians 6:19, Paul reminds us that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost. He goes on, in verse 20, to say we have been purchased by God, we are not our own. He goes on to clarify why this matters. Since you are not your own, your body does not belong to you, it is His. Paul goes on to say that it is our responsibility to glorify Him with our bodies and our spirits. To put it very simply, even if it’s a little uncomfortable for us, what we do with our bodies matters to God. What we put into our bodies and what we do to keep them healthy is part of the way that we are expected to give God glory in our lives. It is His intention that this wonderful creation, our bodies, should point to His creative and engineering magnificence as we live and thrive healthily in this world. Of course we know there are things about our bodies and health that we cannot control. However, there are some elements of temple care that we can control.
We probably do a better job of recognizing and managing temple care when we are in our normal routine, but it’s easy to forget it and slip into a less than healthy pattern during this time. That is certainly the normal human response. Why don’t we take this time to look at how we are caring for our bodies, the temple of God? He will empower us to come out of this time of quarantine #StrongerTogether in our bodies. After all, they belong to Him, and they are His dwelling place.
We must work diligently to maintain proper care of our bodies, God’s dwelling place. The items below are meant to be a starting or continuing point for that care.
1. Write each of the following statements on separate note cards or sticky notes:
My body belongs to God.
My body is meant to glorify God.
My body is the temple of the Holy Ghost.
Place those notes in several strategic places around your home or car as a reminder.
2. Prayerfully create a 2-week #StrongerTogether Plan of Action to care for your body. Consider what you are putting into your body, your activity level, your resting habits, etc. Consider what improvements to or maintenance care is needed and create a plan to do so.
3. Pray through these 2 scriptures each morning: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Ask God to help you glorify Him in your body.
4. Give thanks and pray for those who help us care for our temples and who are on the frontlines providing care during this pandemic. Reach out to them with an encouraging message.
To be #StrongerTogether we have to address all of the parts of our incredible existence, our bodies included! If we are going to be all that we can possibly be for God and His Kingdom, we have to care for the vehicle He gave us! Let’s agree to do our best to care for His dwelling place here on earth!
