Week 3: Spirit

THINK ABOUT THIS….
Last week we took on the challenge to become strong in our bodies. As we know, healthy bodies require proper diet and regular exercise in order to grow and thrive. The same is true in our spiritual lives. If we desire to grow #StrongerTogether in our spirit, we must intentionally feed and exercise our spirit! When we do that, we produce the spiritual fruit that Paul describes in Galatians 5:22-23. He says that love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control should grow out of a healthy spirit-life.
So, how do we have a healthy spirit life? A healthy spirit life requires a proper diet of inputs and exercise. Inputs include the things we see, hear, read, and even the people with whom we interact. If those inputs are Godly, then they build up our spirit. If the inputs are not Godly, then our flesh continues to grow in strength. A healthy spirit diet must consist of Godly inputs such as worshipful music, reading the Word, and positive relationships with others. We must also continually examine how much spirit exercise we are getting. Spirit exercise includes the disciplines of prayer, fasting and studying the Word of God.
While we must be diligent to tend to our spirits and relationship with God, we must also be careful that our disciplines do not become checkbox rituals we blindly perform. Our spirit isn’t strengthened through the fulfillment of obligations, but it is continually renewed and strengthened as we submit our lives to God through relationship.
As our spirits grow stronger, our flesh grows weaker. As the spirit rises in strength, it becomes more powerful than the flesh. When that happens, we can then be led and guided by our God-connected spirit, and we are able to overcome our broken and sin-influenced flesh and display the fruit of the spirit.
As we work to become #StrongerTogether in spirit, let’s do a quick check-up on how we are feeding and exercising our spirits.
Check-up: How does each Fruit of the spirit show up in your life?
1. Make a list of your daily basis (inputs = people interactions, news, books, magazines, newspapers, social media, etc).
2. Which of those inputs feed your spirit? Which of those inputs feed your flesh?
3. What adjustments to your diet (inputs) would strengthen your spirit?
What can you begin doing today (or increase doing) to exercise your spirit?

Just like our bodies, our spirits need proper diet and exercise to grow and be strong. Determine this week to carefully examine your spirit life and monitor your inputs and disciplines. Your spirit strength will determine your success in walking out God’s perfect plan for your life. As we continue to grow strong in spirit, we will be #StrongerTogether.
